My own photos

These three sets of photos are ones that I have taken, I tried to make them look similar to John Hedgecoe's however they aren't exactly the same. I tried to use the same technique by having a plain background however I don't think it was the same style as the people in Johns photos look the way John had planned the image out.

Out of these two Photos I prefer the top one this is because it looks a bit like the original one however it isn't exactly the same as it has different lighting and different shadowing. Also I like the other one as it isn't like the original as it has a picture in the background also the lighting is the same all across the photo.

In my opinion, like the other set above I think the top one out of these two is the best considering it looks similar with a twist as you can actually see out of the window also I think the top one looks more relaxed where as the side one looks unnatural. This means that you very rarely look out of a window like that.

For these photos I think both of them are good however my favourite is the side one, this is because you can see a bit more detail in the basket however for the top one you can see how her body language is.

A summary of John Hedgecoe

This summary is about John Hedgecoe and these bullet points explain his style, technique, narrative and context.

  •  John Hedgecoe's style is elegant, however is irregular this is because he captures a range of posed shots and close ups of artists.
  • One Technique John uses is taking close ups of people which are just of the top half of their body, and not there legs. Also a technique is using a digital camera and trying to use natural lighting.
  • In John Hedgecoe's photographs - some of them have narrative, which means what is the story behind the photo.
  • The narrative of the pictures are what the 'models/peoples' body language is, their facial expressions and what the background is like in each picture.
  • The context of his work is what the photograph actually means. However we don't really know what the right meaning is, we just look and think about what the photographer wants to show.

Focal Point John Hedgecoe

Focal Point is at which the point of the rays and waves meet after the reflection also it is the centre of the subject or interest.

Sir Stanley Spencer, by John Hedgecoe, 1959 - NPG P161 - © John Hedgecoe / Topfoto

In my opinion this image from John Hedgecoe is focal point because the main interest or activity is the main looking out of the window as you just look at him and wonder what he would be/ is looking at. In this photo I most like the way he is positioned and the way the lighting come through the window onto him, that is good as the lighting is spreading over the image so you can see the outline of his body.

I think this link is good because it tells you about the different focal points you can use e.g
    Single, Centre Auto Focus Point
Specific, Single, Off-Centre Auto Focus Point

Depth of field Annie Leibovitz

Depth of field is the distance between the nearest object and the furthest object.

This photo shows a clear understanding of depth of field as the nearest object is the lady running down the steps and the furthest object is on top of the steps which is the castle. This image is a long depth of field, also this image has been taken in focus considering all of it is clear.
My eyes always go straight to the castle at the top, this is because you can still see the image even though it is misty.

Some of this information has come from this link:

I found this useful as it gives you an explanation on photos and tells you what is a good example of depth of field and which is not.
A bad link would be:
This is bad because you don't know who wrote it and also who could have changed the information it provided.

Lighting John Hedgecoe

Lighting is the equipment at home, workplace and a studio for producing light. Also the arrangement and effects of the lights.
Photography is about light, and in fact, it can be defined as recording the light. Lighting is also one of the hardest things to get right in a photograph. To shoot images that stands out of the crowd, an understanding the light source is critical.

This paragraph has come from this link:
http://www.picturecorrect.com/tips/photography-lighting-techniques/

I found this website useful because it has a clear layout and it explains to you about the different colour of the lighting like smooth colours represents calm moods. Also it gives you tips on how and why to use the flash.

Both of these photos represents lighting because the image below you can see the lighting is coming from the left hand side and is spreading over the rest in the image and lady. For the image above gives a strong lighting effect on the hands which shows you the detail of his body.
I like both of these photos as it gives you detail about the picture as for where most of the lighting is also it outlines the bodies and the other objects that are in the image.
